LANDSCAPES   •     BIRDS & CREATURES   •     PLANES

"Photography is the art of catching that split-second image that "catches your eye". Although a camera can be much quicker than your eye, you can however, train your "minds eye" to be as quick as the camera. When I look at a full panoramic landscape, a bird or aircraft in flight or something as small and delicate as a butterfly in the garden, I try to "zero in" my eye to as what's most important and attractive about the view. The second step I use depends on the subject matter. In landscape photography there's plenty time to plan for tripod stability, lighting, depth of field for focus as well other factors like shutter speed and aperature settings. After all, the landscape isn't going anywhere! However, in action photography there is no luxury of time. In this mode I first observe the subject and then plan ahead for the shot. Wildlife is very unpredictable and will not stay in one position for very long. This requires hand held camera techniques, quick decisions on camera settings and plenty of patience. I guess you could say that the old adage; "being in the right place at the right time" i s true when it comes to photographing wildlife. After I observe their pattern, I prefer to "wait my subject matter out" by getting into position and anticipating where the critters will land or fly by next. This gives me time to adjust my camera settings. Other times, that all gets thrown out the window and requires me to be fast enough to catch them in flight! Either way, the challenge is rewarding. Photography, to me, is the art of seeing. The camera is a tool that enables one to capture what the eye sees and what the heart feels."
